The village of Grossarl (920 m) is the main resort in the valley centre and base for many lovely walks to mountain huts (alms)open to the public, hence the nickname "Valley of the Alms". In winter the resort is well-known for its ski circuit into the neighbouring Gastein Valley (twice winner of the ski area test in the province of Salzburg).

The former mining community of Hüttschlag (1,020 m) is situated 8 km from Grossarl and has been a part of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest National Park in the Alps, since 1991. Enjoy the peace and tranquility as well as the unique walking area in Hüttschlag with its picturesque traffic-free valley head!
