First mentioned in a document in 1287, the building as we know it today dates from the late Gothic period. The chancel was built in 1476 and in 1506 - 1521 Laurenz Rieder finished the nave and the organ loft. Both the chancel and the nave feature magnificent fresco paintings from the 15th and early 16th centuries.

The splendid, Baroque-style Stampfer chapel was added to the north of the nave in the heyday of copper mining. Wall and cupola paintings by Josef Ferdinand Fromiller (1717).

1768 saw the foundation of a brotherhood. In 1780 the church attracted an especially large number of pilgrims who reported that the mercy of God had been bestowed upon them.
