Renowned Austrian composer Gustav Mahler spent some time composing in a 19th century Guesthouse on the shores of Attersee Lake.

From 1893 to 1896 Gustav Mahler resided at the Föttinger Guesthouse. It was here in his tiny lakeside cottage where he conceived parts of his Second and Third Symphony. The Cottage had especially been erected as a place where he could compose in absolute peace and quiet. In 1983, the tiny structure was completely refurbished to its former splendor.
Nature was a very important feature to Gustav Mahler, and he got most of his inspiration for composing from nature. The quietness of this idyllic lakeside spot allowed for a less stress lifestyle and provided a huge source of inspiration. His music focuses on observations of nature life, from trees swaying in the breeze to the rush of the wind and the movement of the lake waters.
The Guesthouse, named Föttinger, still can be found here, on the shores of the Lake. During the warm summer months, visitors flock to its shores for recreation. A hundred years ago it was the place where Gustav Mahler spent some quiet time listening to nature and absorbing the magnificent scenery. However, it was somewhat more peaceful and less distracted these days gone by on the shores of Attersee lake...
