In the 18th and 19th centuries, tar, a valuable natural product from the pine forests of the North, was tarnsported along waterways from teh easternmost outposts of Kainuu to the international trading city of Oulu. Here it was sold as wood preservative, among others for the sailing ships of the super power of Great Britain and the Netherlands.
Today the Tar Route follows the waterways of the river Oulujoki introducing visitors to culture, history and heritage of the region.
This Tar Route cycling tour is best done in three stages to guarantee versatile accommodation:
Lentiira - Kuhmo 42km Kuhmo - Vuokatti 69 km Vuokatti - Kajaani 37 km.

Route: Lentiira - Kuhmo - Sotkamo - Vuokatti - Naapurinvaara - Kuluntalahti - Kajaani
The Lentiirantie road (912) leads from Lentiira to Kuhmo. After the Tönölänsalmi bridge, the Kalevankangas area is on the left, where you will find places to visit and services. From Lentiirantie, turn into the city centre on Koulukatu.
From Kuhmo towards Sotkamo, first take Kainuuntie road, which becomes Sotkamontie (76) at the roundabout. Continue towards Sotkamo, where the name of the road changes to Kuhmontie at the municipal boundary and then to Kainuuntie in the town centre.
In Vuokatti, turn right into Kuikkalammentie (8991) and then left into Pohjavaarantie (8990), which leads towards Kajaani on the northern side of the lake Nuasjärvi. Close to Kajaani, the road changes its name to Vuokatintie. In Kuluntalahti, before the railway bridge, turn left onto Takkarannantie, which leads to the town centre. Drive along Kuurnantie - here you will find a bike path - and across the river, then turn to Onnelantie and continue along the river towards the centre.

The route runs on asphalt. There are separate bike paths close to and in urban areas, otherwise the route runs mainly on the roads. There can be some lively traffic on some sections.
The route is not signposted, so follow the traffic signs. The Sotkamo-Vuokatti and Kajaani conurbations also have own signs for cyclists.
Lentiira is located 42 kilometres north of Kuhmo city centre.
No public transport to Lentiira.
Kuhmo and Sotkamo-Vuokatti, on the other hand, are easily accessible by bus, and Kajaani by train, bus and air.

Along the route you can also get to the actual waters of the Tar Route by renting a sup-board or canoe.
