Stams established its reputation as an intellectual and cultural hub in the Oberland early on through numerous events held at the abbey. The best way to explore the abbey’s Fürstensaal and basilica is on a guided tour, which can be rounded off in the abbey shop with a fine glass of home-distilled fine brandy.
Stams is also a hub for education, home to the Neue Mittelschule, the Meinhardinum Grammar School, the University of Education and the Institute for Social Pedagogy, as well as the Schigymnasium, which is regarded as the training ground for the elite of Austrian skiing. The school has already produced world champions and Olympic gold medallists.
In summer, young and elite athletes from the “Adler” club compete on the Mattensprungschanze Brunnental ski jump in Stams. But nature lovers also appreciate the town: a hike through the ancient Stams oak forest with its nature trail or an adventurous crossing of the River Inn via the narrow suspension bridge are just a few of the highlights in and around Stams.
